Cloudflare helps authenticate genuine images with CAI

The origin of images can be tracked via the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), something that is becoming increasingly important as AI images flow freely. Now Cloudflare joins the coalition that authenticates genuine images online.

Cloudflare is the company responsible for a significant portion of the traffic that moves on the internet. This includes servers and data centers for local caching solutions, as well as storage and traffic management.

Now Cloudflare is joining the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) by being able to follow the authentication chain online for images and video, through so-called C2PA certification - a method to see how an image was created and what has been done to it on the way to the recipient in the form of AI editing or other manipulation.

- By integrating Content Credentials across our global network, we can help media and news organizations verify authenticity and retain ownership of their work, no matter where it spreads online. This is not just about securing individual images - it's about giving publishers the tools they need to maintain trust and remain relevant in the AI era, says Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare.

CAI (Content Authenticity Initiative) is about implementing technology to secure the digital footprint of an image. That is, saving data about what camera an image was taken with, where and when it was taken, and by whom. The data will also include information about processing. It can be seen as an extended and more advanced version of EXIF data, as it can be changed and washed away. CAI information will be encrypted and cannot be changed.

- The spread of false information and images has an actual social impact that not only harms our photojournalists and news agency partners, but society as a whole, stated Sony Europe's marketing manager Salmon-Legagneur in 2024. Sony is one of those involved in the collaboration, as are Leica and Nikon.

Recently, a lot has been written about Deepseek - we recently published an article about Deepseek Janus Pro AI, a generative AI that can generate images. At this link, you can see how it works and what the result is:
