Panasonic Lumix GH7 - with internal recording of Apple ProRes

Phase-detect autofocus and internal ProRes recording, open gate, and the capability for 32-bit float audio recording.

Panasonic Lumix GH7, as expected, builds on many of the features found in the video-centric Lumix GH6 from early 2022. The basic design is the same, but there have been some changes inside.

One of the major changes is the ability to record ProRes 4:2:2 HQ and ProRes RAW HQ internally at 5.7K/30p with a 4.2 gigabit bitrate. Recording ProRes RAW is possible on CFexpress Type B cards, but the GH7 also has an SD card slot for UHS-II. It is also possible to record in "open gate" which captures the entire sensor image without cropping.

The camera can also record 5.8K/30p/25p in 4:3 format and 5.7K/60p/50p in 17:9 format in 10-bit 4:2:0 H.265/HEVC. C4K/4K can be recorded at 120p 4:2:0 or 60p in 4:2:2 at up to 800 megabits. Full-HD 1080p can be recorded at 240p 4:2:4 in 10-bits H.264.

By using an integrated fan, recording can be done without limits, which according to Panasonic has also been combined with efficient diversion of the heat developed during recording. The camera is also weather-sealed to be used in harsh environments.

Users can also load original LUT files and apply them with the "Real time LUT" feature. For those who record and post-process, there is also proxy recording and integration with Frame.io for automatic uploading to the cloud.

The resolution of the newly developed back-illuminated micro four thirds sensor is 25.2 megapixels, while another major new feature of the GH7 is the ability for real-time autofocus: through this, the GH7 gets phase-detect autofocus which increases both the speed and precision of the autofocus compared to its predecessor Panasonic Lumix GH6.

The burst shooting mode of the Lumix GH7 is 14 frames per second with a mechanical shutter, which drops to 10 with continuous autofocus, or up to 75 frames per second with an electronic shutter, which drops to 60 frames per second with continuous autofocus.

The image stabilization has also been improved through an active mode for movements such as walking, while features for correcting perspective distortion have been added. Panasonic has also expanded the recording capabilities for sound to 32-bit float, which facilitates the sound as it does not need to be adjusted during recording. This works with the XLR microphone adapter DMW-XLR2.

The Panasonic Lumix GH7 has a recommended price of 26,990 kronor including VAT. The camera is also sold in a kit with the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-60/2.8-4 APSH Power O.I.S. for 34,990 kronor including VAT. The XLR microphone adapter DMW-XLR2 is priced at 6,890 kronor including VAT.

Press Release: Panasonic Announces New LUMIX GH7 Micro Four-Thirds Mirrorless Camera

The LUMIX GH7 delivers outstanding video performance, wide dynamic range with a newly developed 25.2MP BSI CMOS sensor, and improved AF performance with PDAF (Phase Detection Auto-Focus). To support the efficient workflow required in professional production environments, the GH7 is newly equipped with Apple ProRes RAW internal recording and the World’s first 32-bit float recording, which eliminates the need to adjust sound recording levels during shooting. With the rapid increase in demand for video content in recent years, the number of small teams of video creators is rising, along with the demand for further improvements in the quality of mirrorless cameras with excellent video performance and portability. Since its release in 2009, our LUMIX GH series has developed a strong reputation among creators and video production teams as a model renowned for its shooting performance, innovative features and reliability. The LUMIX GH7 is a next-generation mirrorless camera that meets the needs of creators, whatever their creative field may be. High performance, fast response, and excellent mobility. 25.2MP BSI CMOS sensor with high resolution and fast response, along with 13+ stop dynamic range boost with rich gradation. Adopting PDAF for high-speed, high-precision AF performance, and newly added real-time auto-focus recognition AF for airplanes and trains. Improved image stabilization technology, including perspective distortion correction for videos and High mode in Active I.S. to enable powerful compensation when shooting on the move. Enhanced video quality and optimized workflows from shooting to post-production. Internal recording of 5.7K 30p ProRes 422 HQ and ProRes RAW HQ. World’s first 32-bit float recording, eliminating the need to adjust audio recording levels during shooting when using the new XLR microphone adapter, DMW-XLR2 (sold separately). Allows users to load original LUT files and apply new color looks directly to videos and photos with REAL TIME LUT. Enables proxy recording for workflow efficiency and supports native Camera to Cloud integration with Adobe’s Frame.io, enabling images and videos to be automatically uploaded, backed up, shared, and worked on jointly via the cloud. Open Gate recording to enable flexible framing for any social media platform or client needs. Reliable in the video production field. Unlimited video recording made possible with efficient heat dissipation processing and the integration of a cooling fan. Convenient tilt-free angle monitor that does not interfere with HDMI or USB cables when tilted. Able to withstand harsh environments with dust, splash resistance, and freeze-resistance down to -10 degrees Celsius/14 degrees Fahrenheit. Recording is not possible on the SD card. For an interchangeable lens digital camera, as of June 5th 2024. According to Panasonic's research. When used with the XLR microphone adapter DMW-XLR2 (sold separately). Dynamic Range Boost is not activated when shooting HFR/VFR video of 61fps or higher, or with SH burst shooting. Also not activated at shutter speeds slower than 1/15 during still image shooting, depending on the ISO. When shooting video over 60 fps (including VFR), latitude will be 12+ stop. When shooting at C4K/60p or lower. There are temperature restrictions for resolutions exceeding Cinema4K, VFR/HFR, and ProRes. Recording time depends on battery and memory card capacity. Dust and Splash Resistant does not guarantee that damage will not occur if this lens is subjected to direct contact with dust and water.
