Western Digital & SanDisk to Split: "Better for the Future"

The split aims to make it easier to gain market shares for each part, as well as better product development opportunities.

In 2016, hard drive manufacturer Western Digital acquired flash memory giant Sandisk for 157 billion kronor. The merger was intended to leverage technologies and synergies from each area to accelerate development.

Now, nearly ten years later, Western Digital is planning to split the company into two parts by 2025, a plan that has been in place since 2023 but was postponed. The two parts would represent flash memory and hard drives, respectively, and this division has already occurred in the form of separate websites for each area.

According to Western Digital, the split is intended to better position both areas in the market and make it easier to streamline operations within their respective markets, which is why the websites were first separated before dividing the company's various development areas.
