Erik Johansson opens "Svenstorp Art Center" at his childhood farm

Photographer Erik Johansson opens the Svenstorp Art Center, named after his childhood farm. "The idea is for it to become a permanent place for my photographic art, but also filled with guest exhibitions and serve as a creative space," Erik Johansson tells Kamera & Bild.

Kamera & Bild has followed Erik Johansson on his journey, from freelance photo artist to when he lived in Berlin and worked with clients like Adobe, Google, and Microsoft, and further after the move to Prague.

When Kamera & Bild reaches Erik Johansson this time, he is at home at the Svenstorp farm, Götene, to work on his latest project - the Svenstorp Art Center, which is set to open on May 3, 2025.

- Yes, it's a crazy project, but it feels exciting to see how it turns out. There have been some empty houses that have stood empty, and the idea of creating a creative place has grown over time.

The idea with Svenstorp Art Center is that it will become a permanent place for his photo art, but also have guest exhibitions, a cafe, workshops, and be a creative space.

- It is located right in the area where I photograph, so many of my pictures taken for my projects can be reached within 20 minutes from here. Even if it's not the center on the map, it is for me. Here I will have a permanent exhibition along with seasonal exhibitions, maybe with some surrealistic orientations. The works I will show in the first year are from the local area, it's a bit of locally produced art, you could say, Erik tells us.

"Make Purpose" is one of the images included in Erik Johansson's book "Make Believe".

Erik says that he has long considered having his own permanent exhibition, and that the dream is now becoming a reality.

- When you do an exhibition somewhere, there is a lot of work to put everything together - and then it's over, and that's sad. Moreover, it's fun to start from yourself, to have the creative freedom to exhibit as you want, what is exhibited and during which periods. Additionally, this becomes somewhat of a family project, since it's my sister who runs the farm.

The project also means that Erik will be on-site more than usual, with both tours, events, and in the future also workshops.

- Now the goal is to get everything ready by the opening on May 3rd. Ideas have emerged about how everything should look, from the round shape that is consistent, both in mirror shapes in bathrooms to the interior. Even the facades are slightly rounded with their cloud-based shapes. The facades land a bit in the cloud shapes, as a creative form from the image "Head in the Clouds". There is also a small connection to how I build up the images with different parts and layers, and build up an image like that.
