AWARD
Ingrid Pollard named Hasselblad Award Winner 2024
Photographer Ingrid Pollard is the 44th recipient of the Hasselblad Award and a leading photographer and artist in British contemporary art.
The Hasselblad Foundation now announces that the jury has selected the recipient of the Hasselblad Award 2024, which consists of a Hasselblad camera and 2 million Swedish kronor in prize money. The award goes to the photographer Ingrid Pollard, born in 1953 in Georgetown, Guyana and raised in London. Today, she lives and works in Northumberland, Northeast England.
Pollard's work revolves around an exploration of racism and colonialism, often based on her own experiences and research. She is particularly interested in how these issues are manifested in urban spaces as well as in the landscape. A central part of her artistry is her great interest in photography; its technical properties, its materiality and potential, as well as its historical use in the exercise of control and power.
This is what she says about the award:
The Foundation's motivation for selecting Ingrid Pollard as the 2024 Hasselblad Award recipient reads:
"For the past four decades, Ingrid Pollard has used photography to question deeply ingrained social and cultural structures behind racism, identity, community, and gender. Her work makes both subtle and blatant injustices visible through her focus on the British landscape, iconography, and identity, while challenging the medium of photography and its history. Formally, she employs portraits, archival materials, objects, and text to create complex installations. Born in Guyana and raised in the United Kingdom, Pollard has consistently engaged with colonial history and its ongoing impact on society, both in her artistic practice and as a photography educator. Ingrid Pollard has been highly influential on a younger generation of artists and theorists."
