Nikon Nikkor Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ released: with motorized zoom for video

Nikon now announces the release of its standard full-frame zoom lens for the Z-mount with built-in power zoom developed in 2024.

Nikon is now releasing a lens dedicated to video creators, with the ability to use so-called power zoom, a motorized zoom to change focal length smoothly and at a consistent speed.

The Nikkor Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ lens was revealed to be under development last year, but no more information was given then - now we know more:

The lens features a servo zoom button for easy motorized zooming, along with systems for follow focus, and an ease-in/ease-out function for filmmakers. There are a total of 11 levels of zoom speed that can be assigned to the zoom control, with the ability to save and load settings for composition changes between different takes. Zoom and focus rings have reversible directions and linear manual focusing.

Specifications:

  • The yellow ring around the lens mount indicates that this is a cinema lens.
  • Motorized zoom where the internal motor handles the focal length of 28-135 mm and ensures a stable center of gravity.
  • Optical construction minimizes distortion at all shooting distances. Meso-amorphous coating counteracts ghost effects and lens flare, while reducing focus breathing.
  • Minimum focus distance of 0.34 m from 28 mm to 50 mm and 0.57 m at 135 mm.
  • Ease-in/ease-out: for natural transitions in zoom speed without the need for an external zoom unit.
  • Linear manual focusing: for precise and repeatable focus adjustments.
  • Focus ring with 0.8 m gearing, compatible with standard follow focus units. The lens is also shaped to easily attach a matte box.
  • Position registration and retrieval: available for remote shooting or in "normal" mode.
  • 11 zoom speeds: can be assigned to the zoom control or the camera's Fn buttons.
  • Customizable zoom ring: angle and rotation direction can be adjusted via the camera's menu.
  • Smooth handling: zoom control for precise and easily accessible control, as well as L-fn buttons on the side and top of the lens.
  • High-resolution zoom: doubles the zoom range when shooting in 4K while maintaining resolution and depth of field. Synchronization mode combines the use of powerful zoom and high-resolution zoom.
  • Remote zoom via a computer with NX Tether installed, or a smart device running SnapBridge or NX Field.
  • Weight 1,210 g (including tripod mount) suitable for handheld use or with a gimbal or tripod.
  • Dust and drip-resistant sealing with high performance. Nikon's protective fluorine coating on the front element also makes it easy to clean.
  • Rectangular lens hood (included) with a filter window for adjusting 95 mm filters with the hood mounted.

NIKON RELEASES THE NIKKOR Z 28-135MM F/4 PZ FILM LENS

Global announcement: February 13, 2025

Sales start: April 2025

Recommended retail price: 33,990 SEK

Stockholm, Sweden, February 13, 2025: Today, Nikon releases its first full-frame Z lens specifically designed for film. The NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ is created to facilitate those filming alone or in smaller teams. The lens delivers high-resolution 8K films directly from the camera and is light enough for you to film without a tripod. It is designed to be outstanding and can change everything for filmmakers using Nikon Z full-frame cameras, such as the Z9 and Z8.

With a servo zoom button and a weight of 1,210 g (including tripod collar) suitable for use with both gimbal and handheld, this is a compact, well-balanced, and reliable lens that becomes the first choice for filmmakers who want to work with minimal equipment. The video-specific optical construction delivers high-resolution 8K films with great flexibility for cropping in post-production, as well as 4K output. Nikon's high-performance glass and optical coatings ensure that users can achieve remarkably clear film sequences regardless of distance - even when shooting in bright sunlight or studio lighting.

The yellow ring indicates that this powerful zoom is a film lens with a Z mount and that it is compatible with a wide range of professional film accessories, including matte boxes and follow focus systems. Key features for cinematographers include ease-in/ease-out (which means you don't need an external zoom unit with a motor) and there are 11 different levels of zoom speed that can be assigned to the zoom control on the lens. The ability to register and later retrieve position settings allows the user to change composition between takes, linear manual focusing provides precise and repeatable results, and the direction of the focus and zoom rings can be reversed. The lens is also sealed against dust and moisture and can be remotely controlled.

Dirk Jasper, Product Manager, Nikon Europe says: “We want to ensure that the Z system is the first choice for content creators at all levels and Nikon's first professional film lens for cameras with a Z mount is an exciting step forward. You can trust that this film lens delivers fantastic results, making it a valuable tool in situations where time, budget, or circumstances mean that retakes are not possible.”
