RED releases two Z Cinema cameras: V-Raptor X Z & Komodo-X Z

In 2024, the cinema company RED was acquired by Nikon. Now they are releasing their first cameras with Z mount.

In April last year, Nikon acquired the cinema company RED, founded in 2005. RED has both hardware and software to optimize image quality for high-resolution video and live broadcasts, including Raptor cameras with 8K video for professional use.

Now the collaboration bears fruit in the form of the first two releases of RED's cameras Komodo-X and V-Raptor with Nikon's Z mount. This means that the cameras can be used with all of Nikon's Z lenses - including the new Nikkor Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ released today.

The new name for the product line will be "Z Cinema", where technology from Nikon and RED will be combined. Among other things, Nikon has released LUT for N-Log together with RED, which allows previewing the result on an external monitor, while making it easier to achieve a consistently correct color profile and appearance when using different camera models.

V-Raptor Z is RED's flagship camera with an 8K sensor with a global shutter. Global Vision from RED gives the camera a dynamic range of more than 20 stops in the Extended Highlights mode. Colors and details in highlights are captured effectively and more evenly, allowing sensitive color tones to be reproduced even under challenging light and environmental conditions.

Komodo-X Z has a 6K Super 35 sensor with a global shutter that provides a wide dynamic range and up to 80 frames per second and 4K recording at up to 120 fps. The camera also supports the R3D Redcode RAW format, RED's proprietary format for film data, which is efficient and easy to handle during editing.

At the same time, a package with RED Z to PL adapter with electronic ND is released, with optional mount adapters that allow you to use lenses with PL mount with the V-Raptor Z Mount and Komodo-X Z cameras.

"Nikon aims to continue improving the possibilities for visual expression in film as it continues to strive for new levels of optical performance in response to the needs of its community. Filmmakers can expect great things from this new synergy between Nikon and RED," Nikon writes in a press release.

Press Release: WE PRESENT THE FIRST Z CINEMA CAMERAS: V-RAPTOR [X] Z MOUNT AND KOMODO-X Z MOUNT

(hereinafter referred to as "RED"), a subsidiary of Nikon Corporation, is pleased to announce the first Z CINEMA cameras: V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount and KOMODO-X Z Mount. Both of these high-performance digital cinema cameras are now equipped with Nikon's Z mount, giving filmmakers access to Nikon's wide range of lenses with NIKKOR Z and NIKKOR F mounts.

V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount and KOMODO-X Z Mount are the first in the new Z CINEMA series of digital cinema cameras that combine robust technology from both Nikon and RED. Both of these new cameras offer cinematic image quality, support the Nikon Z mount, and utilize RED's color science and exclusive high-performance image compression technology. The cameras also feature improved autofocus, and thanks to the Z mount, filmmakers have greater flexibility in their visual expression with an unparalleled range of lenses to choose from.

With its large diameter and short flange distance, the Z mount supports high-resolution NIKKOR Z lenses that provide fantastic sharpness and excellent aberration control, enabling outstanding sharpness all the way to the edges of the image. Filmmakers can also equip their Z CINEMA camera with the FTZ II mount adapter and thus also use NIKKOR lenses with F mount, including the popular vintage lenses in the AI Nikkor series. Both new cameras will also be compatible with the new NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ motorized zoom lens.
